Tugboat Towing and Maritime Accidents
Injuries and deaths aboard tugboats may not be frequent for all companies, but they do occur. The labor involved, weather, collisions, and failed cables and winches can lead to catastrophic incidents. Ships have been damaged or destroyed, which presents serious risks to those who work onboard. Other causes of accidents include negligence, in which an employer’s, owner’s, or another crew member’s actions or lack of attention to safety and maintenance lead to hazardous conditions that may contribute to injuries and fatalities.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued various safety standards, as has the U.S. Coast Guard. Maritime law, in general, requires that vessel owners and operators adhere to these. If a worker is injured on the job, they may be eligible to be compensated, especially if they can prove an employer, owner, or manager was negligent. Legal cases focus on the provisions of maritime law and, for example, the Jones Act.
