Buffalo Marine Service, Houston TX
Maintaining a fleet of more than 52 vessels, Buffalo Marine focuses on energy efficiency and environmental protection. Founded in 1935, it has a no spill policy when it comes to oil and keeps 400 feet of emergency boom on all of its tugs and barges. Its in-house training compliments an array of safety and quality programs. According to Buffalo, its vessels meet/exceed U.S. Coast Guard mandated requirements; out of a five-person crew on each tug, four must hold USCG Tankerman certificates.
Buffalo has 22 towboats in its fleet and 38 tank barges. It recently added four vessels to its fleet, which, according to the company, meet modern emissions and safety standards for tugs. Tug boats range from 62 feet to over 87 feet long.
Its bunkering operations are supported by barges that are accurately sampled and gauged, so fuel deliveries are completed as expected. In addition to oil spill boom, each vessel has 60-foot bunker booms with hose and can pump at rates of up to 600 metric tons per hour. The company also utilizes state-of-the-art mass metering and line haul technology, driven by barges with up to 30,000-barrel capacities.
In August 2015, an employee claimed to be seriously injured when a line broke while docking a vessel, the San Kennedy. He was subsequently knocked onto the deck and suffered injuries alleged to have caused pain and suffering, impairment, disfigurement, and loss of earnings. The charge was that the company failed to supervise and train crew members, implement safety procedures/policies and ensure the general safety of the workplace. In addition to other forms of compensation, he was seeking medical expenses as well.
Another employee claimed to have been injured aboard the tugboat San Agustin when re-positioning the vessel, and it hit a barge. He was employed as pilot on the tug at the time. Later, he filed a lawsuit for pain and suffering, lost earnings, medical costs, and mental anguish. The total for monetary relief sought in the lawsuit was $1 million plus additional costs.
