Commissioned in 2002, the Boomvang Spar is operated by Anadarko (30 percent owned by the company, 20 percent owned by Ocean Energy, Inc., and 50 percent owned by Enterprise Oil Gulf of Mexico, Inc.). It is situated in blocks 642, 643, and 683 and sits in 3,678 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico, about 150 miles south of Houston, Texas. The platform was one of the first to feature an open truss structure, which replaced the lower cylindrical hull in offshore facilities. The designed reduced the cost and weight of the project. Each spar has air chambers that provide the floating structure with buoyancy, which are located in the upper hull.
At 543 feet long, the structure weights 17,000 tons. Although a discovery well was drilled in 1988, by Shell, production didn’t begin until January 2002. Development of the facility cost $250 million.
The Boomvang is one of 10 floating platforms operated by Anadarko.
A Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) fire report detailed a 2003 incident caused by an equipment failure. The pressure packing gland of the third-stage compressor cylinder failed when nuts holding it in place backed off retaining studs. A gas leak resulted and ignited with exposure to the compressor and engine. The fire was quickly extinguished by fire water pumps and a deluge system. Estimated damage cost $190,000, but no injuries were noted.
In February 2009, a worker was injured when removing a corroded chain fall and trolley from a beam. According to a BSEE Accident Investigation Report, his finger tip was severed after a load shifted and pinched the worker’s finger. The report cited a failure to recognize the hazard and improper hand placement, and that a pry bar should have been used instead of bare hands. Also, the load should have been secured with the proper equipment.
There were 260 offshore injuries in 2009 and 151 in 2016, according to the BSEE.
